Todd and I first came across a gigantic locust in Bocas Town on Isla Colon, Panama. We were relaxing with our hotel room door open in the evening (the hotel across from club that blasted rega-ton beats until 4am) when a huge moth flew in and landed on Todd's leg. I took a second look and determined that it was not a moth at all: it was a gigantic grasshopper, the size of my hand. I stared at it in horror. Once Todd saw my face he looked down at his leg, grabbed the thing and threw it out the open door. It landed with a THUD.
A few days later, on our ride up to Tesoro, the owner started to tell us about these gigantic locusts that would make their way into her house despite her diligent use of mosquito netting. We told her that we had already had a locust experience.
Below is a picture of a dead one that we found on a tree near our beach. You can see the size of it compared to my lovely hand.

Of course we had a few more locust encounters during our stay in the dolphin cabin. They all involved me finding the locusts and begging Todd to deal with them. Those things were just freaky...they were so huge.

I'm becoming less and less enchanted by the dolphin cabin.
Yeah. The owner made a point of describing it as "rustic" to Todd a number of times.
Rustic, natural, and potentially full of critters may have been a better explanation.
I'm not sure I'm seeing the locust. Is it that thing that begins with where your cuticle is and ends at the joint where your thumb meets your hand? If so, that is totally gross. I have seen a lot of big bugs in my day, but a giant locust is a beast all it's own, and I'm even more grossed out by the fact that it likes to land on humans. AAAAAAck!
Ok, any insect that lands with a "thud" is definitely no friend of mine.
But, it is quite interesting to read about these different creatures. :)
