Snorkeling Cayo Zapatilla

The first time I have ever snorkeled was on our honeymoon. I was sold after my very first expedition. We were lucky enough to have tons of places to snorkel (Tesoro Escondido and La Piscina Natural to name a few). My most memorable snorkeling trip was when we were on the first of the Cayo Zapatilla islands. I was snorkeling in the reef and spent over an hour following a school of tang fish. I didn't know the name of the fish at the time...I merely knew them as the "Dory fish" from Finding Nemo (sad, I know). Below is a picture of a tang fish (courtesy of google images).
Earlier that day I was scared out of the water by a needle fish. I had just started snorkeling when I noticed (what I thought was) a barracuda-looking fish nearby. I surfaced to ask Todd about it. At that time he said he didn't know what kind of fish it was, but that he had seen them before and that they appeared to follow him as he swam. I was immediately freaked: a barracuda-like fish following me? I returned to the water, but in my freaked-out mode I swam in a circle to determine whether I was being followed. Sure enough, Mr. barracuda-looking fish and HIS FRIEND were now following me. I was on the beach in seconds.

Now, thanks to the internet, I realize that needle fish and barracuda really don't look alike. Below are pictures of both.

Ha ha ha ha! I used to think needle fish were barracuda, too! See what happens when you put a Minnesota girl on a reef?!

So funny! I can just see freaked-out, snorkeling Anna, swimming in circles.

By the way, when I first opened this page, the first thing I said was, "Ooh! It's Dory!" I can't believe you got to swim with her. Was she as forgetful in person? Or, in fish?
