Honduras 2010 - Background

Our Central American vacation spot of choice this year: Honduras. A bit of geography for orientation purposes: Honduras sits to the east of Guatemala, and north of both El Salvador and Nicaragua. Honduras' Carribbean coastline is about 397 miles long...it's pacific coast is less than 40 miles long. The Bay Islands, three islands off the Honduran Caribbean coast, are Guanaja, Roatan & Utila. Todd and I spent the majority of our trip on Roatan, in the city/village of West End. We made a 5 day trip to the mainland, via a ferry from Roatan to the port city of La Ceiba. In La Ceiba we headed up the mountain into the rain forest surrounding the Congrejal river. It was only a 30 minute drive from sea to mountain rain forest.

The Bay Islands are one of many popular diving spots in the Caribbean. Todd and I spent the beginning of our trip in "dive school"; we received our PADI Open Water Diver certifications on Oct. 20. We left the following day for the mainland, only to return to Roatan on Oct. 25 for more diving. We have some underwater video footage of me flopping around as a new diver and Todd giving the camera the Slayer symbol...from when we were in training, which I'll share later. We also have some footage of underwater critters, Todd paddling the Congrejal, and the terrible and awesome weather we experienced - all of which I'll share in due time. We don't have as many critter pictures (sorry, Rachie)...we had the most interaction with hens & roosters. They roamed freely around our cabana in Roatan and tended to crow/fight/make noise at all times of day. We'd awake frantically in the middle of the night, thinking we heard a kid crying or something, only to figure out it was a damn rooster. If we go back, we won't stay at that cabana again.

For starters, here's a map of Honduras:
