More Critters: Howler Monkeys

On our walk out of Cahuita National Park, we came upon a large family/group of howler monkeys. We discovered them as we heard one eating the seeds featured in this pic:
It was eerie. I remember thinking it was a frog or something small, on the ground. Then we looked up to see this one chewing and burping.

The howler monkeys are pretty cool. We never actually saw them on our honeymoon, as they're reclusive, but we did hear them. Howler monkeys are known for their signature howl. It's a scary noise - it sounds like the noise the orcs make in Lord of the Rings. We heard them on our honeymoon while biking from Puerto Viejo to Manzanillo.

On this most recent trip, I showed up to our cabana at Alby Lodge, Cahuita, before Todd. I sent him a text and waited in this pavilion in the pouring rain. Then, the howler monkeys started up. There's really no reason to be afraid as they don't confront humans or become violent. They just sound scary. So there I was, having had been in Costa Rica for only 12 hours, alone, waiting for my injured Toddie, and the howler monkeys were going crazy. I'll find a sound clip and post that for y'all.

Here are some more pictures of those cute-yet-scary howler monkeys:

Cute! I'll have to wait until after nap time to listen to the clip.
